4 of the Best High-Performance Vehicles From BMW

June 22nd, 2017 by

BMW offers both luxury vehicles and high-performance cars that deliver a lot more excitement and energy than anything you’ll find in the affordable car market. But even among BMW’s offerings, a few vehicles stand out for their power and solid engineering.

Alpina B7

With a six-figure MSRP, the Alpina B7 sedan goes beyond what you’d expect from a four-door vehicle by offering supercar parts under the hood. The engine combines a twin turbo with an eight-cylinder engine to pump 600 horsepower out of 4.4 liters. Despite the large body, the Alpina B7 has a maximum speed of 193 mph and can pull off a 0-60 in 3.6 seconds.

The rest of the vehicle doesn’t let the engine down, and it comes with features like available 21-inch wheels, a carbon-fiber core frame that combines steel with weight-saving carbon fiber, and a Launch Control that lets you leap off the starting line.

Alpina B6

The Alpina B6 is for the grand coupe body what the Alpina B7 is for the Series 7. The vehicle comes with the same engine and delivers the same horsepower and acceleration, plus it comes with a four-pipe exhaust system that boosts the engine’s growl when you switch to Sport mode using the Driving Dynamics Control. All that power can stop in a hurry thanks to the Alpina-branded 14.7-inch brake discs, and the standard adaptive sport suspension actively adjusts for road conditions and can offer either comfort or a sporty response depending on which mode you choose.

While the Alpina badge brings regular cars up to supercar standards, the i8 is the real deal. The i8 combines the power of a turbocharged three-cylinder engine with the instant torque of a plug-in hybrid design and offers a combined 357 horsepower. That’s much less than the Alpina’s V8, but thanks to the smaller design the i8 can get a 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds. The i8 has a nearly perfect center of gravity, and four driving modes let you choose between comfort, performance, efficiency, or an electric mode that gives you 15 miles of pure battery power.

X5 M

When you want a vehicle that combines power and size, the X5 M is the BMW that will deliver. The X5 M comes with the Alpina’s 4.4-liter turbo V8, although it only gets 567 horsepower out of the design and can go 0-60 in 4.0 seconds. As an SUV, the X5 M comes with a top-notch all-wheel-drive system and standard 21-inch wheels, and as a performance vehicle, the upgraded suspension features a double-wishbone front end and an anti-roll rear end.

There are plenty more performance vehicles where these four came from. The M line offers high-performance versions of just about every series BMW has to offer, including the relatively inexpensive Series 2 and Series 3. If you want to experience some of the best-engineered cars allowed on the road today or the innovations that are redefining what a supercar can do tomorrow, then you should test drive one of these cars and find out what BMW performance is all about.
